    Kim Hui Yu

“It had a strange look, like an alien, but it wasn’t angry. It sat still on the branch all the time,” said Kim Hui Yu, who photographed the flat-faced longhorn beetle in the image above on a family trip to Gunung Jerai on Malaysia’s west coast.

A lightbulb in a mosquito net attracted invertebrates overnight. In the morning, she chose the most colourful to photograph. “I want people to know that all creatures, even small ones, count. So don’t destroy the forest.”

The photo, entitled Alien, is one of eight in a biodiversity display at the Natural History Museum’s 2025 Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, opening in London on 17 October. The images are past entries to the competition.

Hannah McCartney, who runs the competition, says the images can have a powerful impact – the aim is to get visitors to care enough that they later take action. A prime example is Innocence Betrayed by Hilary O’Leary, featuring a 4-month-old black rhino calf nuzzling an anti-poaching scout. It had been found lost in the bush.

  • How Easter Island’s famed heads ‘walked’

How Easter Island’s famed heads ‘walked’

Rollers, wooden carts, and even alien life are just a few of the theories of how people moved the iconic moai statues of Easter Island (also called Rapa Nui). These roughly 130,000-pound, 32-foot-high statues somehow made it about 11 miles from the volcanic quarries where they were made to their final positions, over hilly terrain–all without modern technology.

Now, using 3D modeling and field experiments from archeologists and anthropologists, we might finally have an answer. Rope and “walking” along specially designed roads moved the giant statues, according to a study recently published in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

“It shows that the Rapa Nui people were incredibly smart. They figured this out,” study co-author and Binghamton University anthropologist Carl Lipo said in a statement. “They’re doing it the way that’s consistent with the resources they have. So it really gives honor to those people, saying, look at what they were able to achieve, and we have a lot to learn from them in these principles.”

Field experiments revealed that using rope and a small group of people, the people of Rapa Nui could have “walked” the moai statues. CREDIT: Carl Lipo

    What are the moai statues?

Rap Nui’s moai statues are massive megaliths that were built by the Rapa Nui people in roughly 1400–1650 CE. Most people know them as the Easter Island heads, but these heads do have full bodies.

There are about 1,000 of these enormous statues. About 95 percent of them were carved out of tuff ejected from volcano Rano Raraku. Tuff is a compressed volcanic ash and is easy to carve with the stone tools available at the time called toki.

The moai statues were built in honor of chieftains and other important people who had died. The statues were placed on rectangular stone platforms called ahu, which serve as tombs. Initially, the moais were made with different characteristics to represent the appearance of the deceased.

    ‘The physics makes sense’

In this new study of roughly 1,000 moai statues, a team put this to the test. The same team previously showed that an upright, rocking motion, let the large statues “walk” from their volcanic quarry over to the ceremonial platforms.

“Once you get it moving, it isn’t hard at all – people are pulling with one arm. It conserves energy, and it moves really quickly,” said Lipo. “The hard part is getting it rocking in the first place. The question is, if it’s really large, what would it take? Are the things that we saw experimentally consistent with what we would expect from a physics perspective?”

To see how a larger statue might move, the team created high-resolution 3D models of the moai. With these models, they identified distinctive design features, including wide D-shaped bases and a forward lean. These bases would make them more likely to be moved in a rocking, zig-zagging motion.

This diagram illustrates the "walking" technique whereby moai were moved along prepared roads through alternating lateral rope pulls while maintaining a forward lean of 5–15° from vertical.
This diagram illustrates the “walking” technique whereby moai were moved along prepared roads through alternating lateral rope pulls while maintaining a forward lean of 5–15° from vertical. Image: Carl Lipo.

They then built a 4.35-ton replica moai with the distinct forward-lean design to test out this theory. They could move the moai about 328 feet in 40 minutes, with a team of only 18 people.

“The physics makes sense,” said Lipo. “What we saw experimentally actually works. And as it gets bigger, it still works. All the attributes that we see about moving gigantic ones only get more and more consistent the bigger and bigger they get, because it becomes the only way you could move it.”

    Passing the road test

The roads of Rapa Nui also lend some support to this new theory. At about 14-feet-wide with a concave cross-section, these roads were ideal for stabilizing the statues as they moved.

“Every time they’re moving a statue, it looks like they’re making a road. The road is part of moving the statue,” said Lipo. “We actually see them overlapping each other, and many parallel versions of them. What they are probably doing is clearing a path, moving it, clearing another, clearing it further, and moving it right in certain sequences. So they’re spending a lot of time on the road part.”

Example of a road moai that fell and was abandoned after an attempt to re-erect it by excavating under its base, leaving it partially buried at an angle.

According to the team, there are no other real theories that could explain how the moai were moved. Rapa Nui is notorious for wild theories that have zero evidence, and the team worked to put a real theory to the test.

“People have spun all kinds of tales about stuff that’s plausible or possible in some way, but they never go about evaluating the evidence to show that, in fact, you can learn about the past and explain the record that you see in ways that are fully scientific,” said Lipo. “One of the steps is simply saying, ‘Look, we can build an answer here.’”

Is It All About The Resources? UFOs, Water Extraction, and Power Blackouts!

There are many aspects to the UFO and alien question, but the notion that they are here for our raw materials, a consequence of which seemingly results in mass power blackouts, is one that is often left unaddressed. The fact is, there are many such accounts on record indicating that these seemingly otherworldly vehicles are not only using our own power reserves for their own propulsion systems (we might assume) but are also extracting water from our rivers and even water towers, often thousands of gallons at a time.

  • Pentagon Denies Existence of “Yankee Blue” Memo Reported by Wall Street Journal

Pentagon Denies Existence of “Yankee Blue” Memo Reported by Wall Street Journal

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) response has raised new questions about a widely circulated Wall Street Journal (WSJ) article that described a Department of Defense (DoD) effort known as “Yankee Blue.” According to the WSJ, the Pentagon ordered an immediate halt to a practice in which military officers misled subordinates into believing they were working on reverse-engineering extraterrestrial technology. But when pressed for the underlying documentation, the Pentagon now says no such memo exists.

In September 2025, the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) issued a final response to FOIA case 25-F-3514, denying the existence of records related to the alleged 2023 directive. The request specifically sought “a copy of the memorandum issued by the Office of the Secretary of Defense in spring 2023 ordering the immediate cessation of practices associated with the so-called ‘Yankee Blue’ program.” The response stated that after “thorough searches of the electronic records and files of CMD, no records of the kind you described could be identified”.

The denial directly contradicts the WSJ’s claim that “the defense secretary’s office sent a memo out across the service in the spring of 2023 ordering the practice to stop immediately.” If such a memo existed, it would be retained by OSD correspondence management systems and would be subject to FOIA. Given that the topic allegedly involved halting a hazing ritual, rather than revealing classified operations, the record would not be expected to carry high-level classification. Courts have repeatedly held that embarrassment or institutional sensitivity does not constitute grounds for classification.

This is not the first “no records” finding tied to the WSJ reporting. In FOIA case 25-F-3515, the DoD also reported that it could not locate “briefing materials, talking points, slide decks, notes, or summaries prepared for or presented to Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines in connection with briefings on ‘Yankee Blue.’” The WSJ reported that Haines was briefed on the discovery, describing her as “stunned” upon hearing about the scale of the deception. That request is currently under appeal.

🚨 The Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) says it found no records tied to “Yankee Blue” hazing rituals which convinced “hundreds and hundreds of people” they were working on a “reverse engineering” program for alien technology, despite detailed Wall Street pic.twitter.com/KQY50ET08i

    — John Greenewald, Jr. (@blackvaultcom) June 26, 2025

Separately, in case 2025-06002-F, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) said it found “no records” of investigative reports, summaries, or closure memos tied to “Yankee Blue.” While it remains possible that another entity, such as an Inspector General’s office, handled such inquiries, the consistent pattern of FOIA denials leaves significant doubt as to whether the WSJ’s central claims can be substantiated.

The WSJ story has been frequently cited by skeptics as a definitive account explaining long-standing rumors of U.S. programs tied to recovered non-human technology. But with the Pentagon’s FOIA responses turning up empty, the reliability of that reporting is now under scrutiny. Either the FOIA system is omitting responsive material through error or concealment, or the memo and briefings described in the article never existed, or at the very least, never existed in the way they were reported. Appeals are pending, but for now, the official record does not align with the narrative that has been widely circulated in media coverage as first reported by the WSJ.

Some Bizarre Cases of UFO Crashes and Crash Retrievals

In the world of UFO phenomena and talk of UFO sightings and aliens, the most spectacular of these reports must surely be those in which these crafts, possibly from other stars, have crashed to earth. Here we have landing right in our laps the answer to whether we are alone in the universe, the physical evidence we need to finally prove that aliens are real. Unfortunately, these alleged crashes have a bad habit of being moved in on by the government to be swept under the carpet, or to otherwise fade into the mists of time while frustratingly denying us the proof we would expect to get from such a spectacular incident. Here we are going to take a look at a few of the more bizarre cases of UFO crashes, and the forces that conspired to make them fade into the mists of time.

From Aerial Pursuits to Creatures Roaming in the Woods: Fascinating UFO and Alien Encounters of Brazil!

From Aerial Pursuits to Creatures Roaming in the Woods: Fascinating UFO and Alien Encounters of Brazil!

The entire South American continent is a hub of UFO activity, and has been since the start of the Modern UFO Era. There is little doubt, though, that one of the most active countries, in terms of UFO and alien encounters, not only in South America but in the world, is Brazil, which has boasted regular and consistent reports since the 1950s, at least. Moreover, many of these encounters feature multiple witnesses and also include veteran military and commercial airline pilots. In short, while we should treat all encounters from anywhere in the world with a cautionary pinch of salt, there is good reason to suggest that many of the following accounts are very credible.
