  UMass Amherst engineers have built an artificial neuron powered by bacterial protein nanowires that functions like a real one, but at extremely low voltage. This allows for seamless communication with biological cells and drastically improved energy efficiency.   Rocket Lab launched a radar satellite for Synspective today (Oct. 14), the seventh spacecraft it has lofted for the Japanese Earth-observation company to date.

  An Electron rocket lifted off from Rocket Lab‘s New Zealand site today at 12:33 p.m. EDT (1630 GMT; 5:33a.m. Oct. 15 local New Zealand time), on a mission called “Owl New World.”

  The name is a reference to the payload — one of Synspective’s Strix radar-imaging satellites. (Strix is a genus of owls.)

  This particular spacecraft is “the first of a new generation of satellites by Synspective for its low Earth orbit constellation that provides high-frequency, high-resolution Earth observation data for disaster response and management, national security and environmental monitoring,” Rocket Lab wrote in a mission description, which you can find here.

  This Strix satellite has a particularly wide frame, which spurred Rocket Lab to build a custom “arrowhead” payload fairing to accommodate it.

  All went according to plan on today’s launch, according to Rocket Lab: Electron deployed the Strix satellite 362 miles (583 kilometers) above Earth just over 50 minutes after launch, right on schedule.

  Seven Strix satellites have reached the final frontier to date, on seven different Electron flights. All of these missions have had “owl” names: “The Owl’s Night Begins,” “The Owl’s Night Continues,” “The Owl Spreads Its Wings,” “Owl Night Long,” “Owl For One, One For Owl,” “Owl The Way Up” and now “Owl New World.”

  Simulating Complex Coronal Mass Ejections Shows A Weakness In Space Weather Forecasting

  Avoiding, or at least limiting the damage from, geomagnetic storms is one of the most compelling arguments for why we should pay attention to space. Strong solar storms can have an impact on everything from air traffic to farming, and we ignore them at our own peril and cost. Despite that threat, the tools that we have applied to tracking and analyzing them have been relatively primitive. Both simulations and the physical hardware devoted to it require an upgrade if we are to accurately assess the threat a solar storm poses. As a first step, a new paper from a group led by researchers at the University of Michigan created a much more detailed simulation that shows how important it is that we also have the appropriate sensing hardware in place to detect these storms as they happen.

  Why Signal’s post-quantum makeover is an amazing engineering achievement

  The encryption protecting communications against criminal and nation-state snooping is under threat. As private industry and governments get closer to building useful quantum computers, the algorithms protecting Bitcoin wallets, encrypted web visits, and other sensitive secrets will be useless. No one doubts the day will come, but as the now-common joke in cryptography circles observes, experts have been forecasting this cryptocalypse will arrive in the next 15 to 30 years for the past 30 years.

  The uncertainty has created something of an existential dilemma: Should network architects spend the billions of dollars required to wean themselves off quantum-vulnerable algorithms now, or should they prioritize their limited security budgets fighting more immediate threats such as ransomware and espionage attacks? Given the expense and no clear deadline, it’s little wonder that less than half of all TLS connections made inside the Cloudflare network and only 18 percent of Fortune 500 networks support quantum-resistant TLS connections. It’s all but certain that many fewer organizations still are supporting quantum-ready encryption in less prominent protocols.

  Triumph of the cypherpunks

  One exception to the industry-wide lethargy is the engineering team that designs the Signal Protocol, the open source engine that powers the world’s most robust and resilient form of end-to-end encryption for multiple private chat apps, most notably the Signal Messenger.   Inside Nvidia’s ‘grid-to-chip’ vision: How Vera Rubin and Spectrum-XGS push toward AI giga-factories

  Nvidia will be front-and-center at this week’s Global Summit for members of the Open Compute Project (OCP), emphasizing its “grid-to-chip” philosophy.

  The company is making announcements on several fronts, including the debut of Vera Rubin MGX, its next-gen architecture fusing CPUs and GPUs, and Spectrum-XGS Ethernet, a networking fabric designed for “giga-scale” AI factories.

  It’s all part of a bigger play by Nvidia to position itself as a connective tissue throughout the AI tech stack, embedding itself across every layer including chips and networking to full data center infrastructure and software orchestration.

  “Data centers are evolving toward giga scale,” said Nvidia senior product marketing manager Joe Delaere ahead of the event. “AI factories that manufacture intelligence generate revenue, but to maximize that revenue, the networking, the compute, the mechanicals, the power and the cooling, all have to be designed as one.”

  Putting numbers on next-gen Vera Rubin infrastructure

  Nvidia will provide more detailed specifications for its Vera Rubin NVL144 MGX-generation open architecture rack servers at the event — although the servers themselves will not be available until late 2026.

  The Vera Rubin chip architecture is the successor to Nvidia’s Blackwell. It is purpose-built for “massive-context” processing to help enterprises dramatically speed AI projects to market.

  Vera Rubin MGX brings together Nvidia’s Vera CPUs and Rubin CPX GPUs, all using the same open MGX rack footprint as Blackwell. The system allows for numerous configurations and integrations.

  “MGX is a flexible, modular building block-based approach to server and rack scale design,” Delaere said. “It allows our ecosystem to create a wide range of configurations, and do so very quickly.”

  Vera Rubin MGX will deliver almost eight times more performance than Nvidia’s GB 300 for certain types of calculation, he said. The architecture is liquid-cooled and cable-free, allowing for faster assembly and serviceability. Operators can quickly mix and match components such as CPUs, GPUs, or storage, supporting interoperability, Nvidia said.

  Matt Kimball, principal data center analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy, highlighted the modularity and cleanness of the MGX tray design.

  “This simplifies the manufacturing process significantly,” he said. For enterprises managing tens or even hundreds of thousands of racks, “this design enables a level of operational efficiency that can deliver real savings in time and cost.”

  Nvidia is also showing innovation with cooling, Kimball said. “Running cooling to the midplane is a very clean design and more efficient.”

  With electricity supplies under increasing pressure, there’s a new trade-off between the cost of chips and their energy efficiency, making chips like Nvidia’s latest more attractive. Brandon Hoff, research director for enabling technologies at IDC, said, “You get more tokens per watt. That’s kind of where we’re ending up. People have the money, they don’t have the power.”

  Dovetailing with the Vera advances, Nvidia and its partners are gearing up for the 800 VDC era. Moving from traditional 415 VAC or 480 VAC three-phase systems offers data centers increased scalability, improved energy efficiency, reduced materials usage, and higher capacity for performance in data centers, according to Nvidia. The advanced infrastructure necessary has already been adopted by the electric vehicle and solar industries.

  But the transition requires collaboration from all the layers of the stack, and Nvidia is working with more than 20 industry leaders to create a shared blueprint, it said.

  Supporting ‘giga-scale’ AI super-factories

  Along with Vera Rubin MGX, Nvidia will this week introduce Spectrum-XGS Ethernet support for OCP.
